Let's clear up some confusion around Special VFR (SVFR). All pilots hear about it, but few actually understand when to use it.

What is Special VFR?

  • A clearance that allows you to fly VFR inside controlled airspace when the weather is technically below basic VFR minimums (3SM 1,000ft ceilings)

How can I get SVFR?

  • You must request it! ATC will not offer

What are the requirements for SVFR?

  • For Airplanes: Day- 1SM visibility clear of clouds. Night- Must hold instrument rating

  • For Helicopters: Day or Night- Less than 1SM visibility and clear of clouds

Is Special VFR a good idea?

  • Just because it's legal does not mean it's smart, ESPECIALLY for helicopter pilots. Know your skill level, your environment, and do not push beyond your limits.

  • Sometimes SVFR is the safest, most logical way to get out of controlled airspace when weather is coming in quickly.

Bottom Line:

  • SVFR can be a very smart tool when used in the correct way. Always respect your personal minimums and remember that legal does NOT always equal safe
